Of the seven million people working in the ICT sector in Europe, only 30% are women
Of the seven million people working in the ICT sector in Europe, only 30% are women. A number, according to Unesco that is further diluted if we look at the leadership positions in the technological world; where it drops to 11% and falls precipitously to 6% if we talk about the executive direction of the top 100 technology companies in the world.
– Why and how did this initiative of ‘I, boss’ come about?
We are a company where the three partners are women, as are 90% of the workforce. As a company we thought we should give back to society a little of what we received from it. Trescom is a communication agency and the best thing we know how to do is communicate. Hence, we want to communicate and make visible these success stories.
The name ‘I, Boss’, arises because when someone asks a girl: ‘what do you want to be when you grow up?’; there is still none that says: ‘me, boss’. It doesn’t matter the sector or the profession. They visualize themselves as a teacher, but not running a school; or they see themselves as a doctor, but not as the director of a hospital. Why? One of the causes is that they know very few women who command in their respective professional fields; and because the messages they receive on a daily basis tend to extol their beauty more than their intelligence or leadership skills. Girls and adolescents do not have a mirror in which to look at themselves, they do not know who has already broken that famous glass ceiling.
– What feedback are you receiving, how is it being received?
– We have had a fantastic reception and we are very pleased by the incredible support of companies and business schools. We also feel supported by public institutions. We have had Carme Artigas, Secretary of State for Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence in the presentation of this census. In previous actions had attended the High Commissioner for Spain Entrepreneurial Nation, Francisco Polo.
According to a report by Adecco, in 2020, the IT & TELCO sector was the one that generated the most jobs with 17% of the vacancies and it is estimated that digitalization will create 1.25 million jobs this year that we have just begun. However, algorithms seem to have forgotten half the population along the way. Where are the women?
This is no coincidence, STEM careers – science, technology, engineering and mathematics – are not at the top of girls’ lists when choosing studies. We hope that the census will get to know the women who occupy digital and technical positions of responsibility, in addition to being a reference material to have references in which to be inspired.
More than 50 outstanding women from the Spanish technological ecosystem appear, heads of such important companies as Google, Amazon, Telefónica, Capgemini, Mediapost, Criteo, Vass, Securitas, Indra, Sanitas, Línea Directa, Uber, Vodafone…
– What surprise with pleasure have you taken with this work, or tell us an anecdote of the program?
– With the previous census we developed the ‘Shadowing Yo, jefa’, a mentoring for young people, which gives the possibility to 15 university students to set up an entrepreneurial project with the help and tutoring of 15 bosses. The winner of the Shadowing, Julia Martí, has been selected by Lanzadera to be able to execute her project: TPA, an app to unify and promote the use of public and sustainable transport in Valencia. We are especially proud of her.
During the process of searching for digital bosses we also discovered that throughout history there have been women very relevant to technological development, but they did not have the recognition they deserved. This is the case of Ada Lovelace, mathematician and writer, daughter of Lord Byron, who developed the first algorithm intended to be processed by a machine. Now it is considered the first computer programmer although for a long time it was questioned. Or Hedy Lamarr, known as an actress, but who in World War II contributed substantially to the Allied victory with the development of a torpedo tracking system. Its principles have been the basis for bluetooth and wifi but until 2014 it was not included in the National Inventors Hall of Fame.
– In what other ecosystems do you think you should visualize the figure of the boss (biotechnology, medicine, mechanical-industrial …)? Have you already thought about a third census?
– Before focusing on another census, we want to make a second call for the ‘Shadowing I, boss’ for university students of STEM careers. We still have to define it well.
And in the future we have in mind another census, we would like to focus on other branches of STEM careers, such as science and health, we believe it is the most necessary. The pandemic has shown us the importance of the health, pharmaceutical and scientific research sectors.
We leave you the complete census of these women who have already come very far
